How to improve VA from 33

by aim780 » Sun Jul 10, 2016 12:36 am
Hi,

I just appeared for VA and got Verbal score 33. I know where I am doing mistake but with that I am confident only to increase my score 1-2 points. Any suggestion on how to increase my score 4-5 points?
Any course, self study or private tutor? If you have any reference please provide.

I have used OG, MH tests, GMAT prep tests, e-gmat verbal live prep(they are not replying now that is why I am posting here)

Thanks,
Rajesh

Hi aim780,

First off, a 670/Q49 is a strong score (it's just above the 80th percentile overall), so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. Before we can talk about how best to improve a V33, I'd like to know a bit more about how you've studied so far:

1) How long have you studied?
2) How did you score on each of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?

3) What is your goal score?
4) When are you planning to retake the GMAT?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your reply. Please find the details below:
1)) How long have you studied?
Approx 1 year but it was not fully concentrated whole time.

2) How did you score on each of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
MGMAT1_640(Q49V31)
MGMAT2_660(Q45V35)
MGMAT3_650(Q45V34)
MGMAT4_630(Q46V31)
MGMAT5_680(Q48V34)
MGMAT6_650(Q45V34)
GPrep1_660(Q50, V28) - 28th May
GPrep2_660(Q49, V33) - 20th June
Actual GMAT - 670(Q49, V33) - 27th June

3) What is your goal score?
Around 720+

4) When are you planning to retake the GMAT?
I haven't taken any date. Actually to decide this I posted this question. If possible I want to finish my GMAT by mid-August so that I will have time to apply this year.

5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
Coming session, if I can improve my score. Because otherwise I do not see any point(My profile is not very strong).

Please let me know if you want any other input.

Thanks,
Rajesh

Hi Rajesh,

Your Official Score and practice CAT scores are remarkably similar. GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, your results show that you essentially performed the same each time (+/- a few points). By extension, this means that 'your way' of approaching the Exam will likely continue to earn you a score in the mid to high-600s.

Thankfully, you CAN train to score at a higher level, but you're going to have to learn to 'see' (and respond to) the GMAT in new ways. However, if you've been studying a certain way for so long, then you've likely developed some 'bad habits' that will some effort to fix (and replace with new 'good habits'). This will likely require that you invest in some new materials and learn/practice some new Tactics.

Thanks Rich,

I agree with you. I will try to find out which habits and tactics I need to change.

Hi Rajesh,

With a Q49, it's difficult to pinpoint any specific areas that you need extra practice in, but there are opportunities for you to pick up points in the Verbal section. As such, I think that you would find the EMPOWERgmat Verbal Score Booster to be quite helpful. Most of our clients finish that Study Plan in under a month, so the time commitment wouldn't be too bad. During that time, you'll also be able to access any of the Quant resources that interest you.
