The air quality board recently informed Coffee Roast, a small coffee
roasting firm, of a complaint regarding the smoke from its roaster.
Recently enacted air quality regulations requires machine roasting more
than 10 pounds of coffee to be equipped with expensive smoke-dissipating
afterburners. The firm, however, roasts only 8 pounds of coffee at a time.
Nevertheless, the company has decided to purchase and install an
afterburner.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the firm's decision?

A) Until setting on the new air quality regulations, the board had
debated whether to require afterburners for machines roasting
more than 5 pounds of coffee at a time.
B) Coffee roasted in a machine equipped with an afterburner has its
flavor subtly altered.
C) The cost to the firm of an afterburner is less than the cost of
replacing its roaster with a smaller one.
D) Fewer complaints are reported in areas that maintain strict rules
regarding afterburners.
E) The firm has reason to fear that negative publicity regarding the
complaints could result in lost sales.

Why C is wrong?

D) Fewer complaints are reported in areas that maintain strict rules

E) The firm has reason to fear that negative publicity regarding the
complaints could result in lost sales.
Premises:
A complaint has been lodged against Coffee Roast.
The regulations regarding 10-pound roasters do not apply to Coffee Roast's 8-pound roaster.
Implication:
The company is not REQUIRED to take any action.
Even so, the company has decided to purchase an expensive afterburner.

The correct answer choice must support Coffee Roast's decision to purchase an expensive afterburner, even though the company is not required to take any action.

E: The firm has reason to fear that negative publicity regarding the complaint could result in lost sales.
This option offers a compelling justification for the afterburner: to avoid negative publicity that could result in lost sales.

The correct answer is E.

C: The cost to the firm of an afterburner is less than the cost of replacing its roaster with a smaller one.
If the goal is to contain costs, Coffee Roast could simply ignore the complaint and do nothing, since the company is not required to take any action.
Hence, this option does not support the company's decision to increase costs by purchasing an expensive afterburner.

Why C is wrong?
Premise: The coffee roasting company is ready to replace the burner even if they are producing less than 8 pounds coffee.
We need to support the companies decision.

Of the given options, only option E gives us a reason to support.
If there is negative publicity of the coffee, the people might no buy it.
Hence the company is ready to replace the burner and end the complaint even if it does not need to to avoid bad reputation.

Regarding option C, the company is not trying to contain the cost here.
Hence we do not need to worry about it.

Correct option: E

Please excuse me if this is not the right way to post a follow-up question.
For me the choice was between D and E. Both the options seem to give Coffee Roast enough incentive to install the afterburner. The experts have explained why E is correct and it makes sense because the decision is purely money-driven. Option D basically says that if Coffee Roast complies with strict rules regarding afterburners, that is, installs the afterburner, the complaints would go away which is what it wants. I get why E is correct, but while under time-pressure, how could we decide between D and E?

Option D talks about the areas in which the rules are maintained.
moreover, Coffee Roast does comply with the rules.

Hence this option is not what we are looking for.

Does this help?
