Profile Evaluation

by Purrple » Tue Aug 11, 2015 11:29 pm
Hi,

A brief background about me:

I'm 30, female and live and work in Delhi. I currently work as a Senior Associate in a Real Estate Private Equity fund (4 years).

Prior to this I was into Real Estate Consulting with an International Property Consultant (2.6 years). I started my career with a KPO and was into financial analysis involving CMBS (2 years).

I have about 9 years of work ex.

Qualifications: BA Economics (Hons) Delhi University and a CFA charter.

I'm seriously considering an MBA since I'm looking to transition out of the Analyst/Associate roles I'm currently getting and into senior/managerial positions. I want to know what kind of schools in the US/Singapore I should apply to, given my profile. I also have a low score in my 3rd year graduation and I guess I'm older than the average MBA candidate, which I would need to make up for with a good GMAT score and a compelling essay.

I'm fairly new to this, so I would really appreciate any feedback/advice on how to take this forward.

Thanks.

First of all 30 is NOT too old!
Even 31.. 32... 33... and then it starts to get a bit too old :)

The first real step is to take your GMAT. The important thing there is not to "just take it" but to go in 100% fully prepared to get the BEST score ever.

Otherwise your profile is good, and we can go into more detail about it, as things go along... but first and foremost - the GMAT and TOEFL!

Best of luck!
Jon

Thanks so much for your reply. I know I have to focus on the GMAT score for now. In India, ISB admits 24 year olds also these days, so I was wondering what the perception is abroad.

Also, I intend to apply to colleges where I can get some financial aid so I don't know if that kind of narrows down my choices a bit.

Hey there Nirali,
Very good to hear from you!

The basic foundation of your profile is mostly excellent - you have a good job with leadership, have some serious NGO/Volunteer stuff with an important award, your GMAT and TOEFL both totally rock! And your UG school is pretty good (even if its not an IIT).

The only real weakness I can see is your GPA - and let's mention in passing also the difficult pool from which you come. (at least you're not doing coding!)

And I think with such a profile, top 15 or Top 20 schools should be within range. It will depend hwo good you can present yourself and how unique you can make your application too.

Let's say that your school list is pretty good. If I were you'd I'd try and add 1-2 more to hedge a bit against the sheer size of the applicant pool from which you come. I'd add one safe school (from the lower end of the ranking) and then any other school that appeals to you.

I hope this helps!

Best,

Jon
