Overwhelmed by where to apply

by BMWM3M4M5M6 » Sun May 24, 2015 1:38 pm
Cross posting from GMAT Club.

Age: 25
Yrs working exp: 3
Undergraduate: Canadian university, Engineering, 3.1 GPA last 2 years (or a B), B- cumulative.
GMAT: 650 (I am dreading rewriting, scored Q46 V34, although was averaging Q47-49 in practice tests).
Work experience: think standard new graduate program, specializing in Technology/Telecom.
Location: Canada
Schools targeted: Ivey, Queen's, Rotman, Schulich - so far only Canadian schools.
Ideal post-MBA opportunities:
- sports marketing
- automotive marketing
- management consulting (with the intention of pursuing something in the above two later on)
Question: with the info provided, are there any US or UK schools I could and should apply to?

Since we don't have too much in the way of specific information (school names, employers etc.) then I can only answer this question by saying if you want to start looking at US schools you should use your GMAT score as a guide. I always recommend using US News rankings (very accurate). Look at schools with a rank of 35+ - these are the ones where the average GMAT starts to hover around the 650 mark. If you resit the GMAT more options would open up to you. Focusing on the verbal portion of the exam is where you'll gain the most total points per raw score point (because of the way the standard deviations are calibrated).

Well, if you want to make a Top US school, then you will likely have to retake the GMAT. A 650 might fly int he top Canadian schools though, esp. if you are from Canada.

But everything depends on you - can you get a higher GMAT? What are your goals? Where would you like to work? What does the rest of your profile look like?

Best,
JF
