Hello Puneeet,
Good to hear from you.

Well you have some really interesting and amazing stuff here. And I'd love to hear more about it - what your role was int he companies, what you did, how many people you led, how long you stayed there, what is happening with the companies now, as well as have some more detail about your family business, your extra curriculars and your volunteer work.

If you can get back to me with some more info, I'm sure I'll be able to advise you,

Best,
JF

Hi Jon,

Thank you for replying to me. Appreciate your time and interest.

Apologies for replying so late

My role in the companies I worked is as below

TalentRecruit: In TalentRecruit I run day to day operations of the company with all the departments reporting to me. We have a team of 40 members ( all seniors professional with experience more that 7 years ). I joined here as regional manager in sales & marketing department. Then got promoted to regional head and was given responsibility of leading whole sales/marketing department with in first 6 months. Then I got involved in various other departments driving strategies. After 11 months in the company I was given the responsibility to run day to day operations and to oversee Sales/Marketing, Client Support, Accounts/Finance and Product development. I report to the MD of the company. We grew from a small product company to the most recognizable brand in recruitment software market today with in a year.

Poineer e Solutions: My role was to handle sales/marketing and operations of the company. I had reporting of 150 team members who were handling different projects. I generated key business accounts for the company.I lead some key projects of Govt. of India for the company's partners. The company now has 4 offices and doing around 2 million dollars turnover a year. I learned quite a lot in the company about every aspect of the business whether it is sales, product, account or HR. I interacted with Central Govt. Ministers and IAS officers, worked with various Govt. departments during my stint.I worked there for around a year and a half.

Sify Technologies: I joined Sify in Sep-2011 as project coordinator after my B.Tech. it was a purely project management role. I was given more responsibility of managing a team of 16 members with in 6 months of joining. After a month I was shifted to a key project for a key client of the company and was given the responsibility of managing 30 team members which included project managers. I was made acting program manager for 4 projects ( without change in the designation due to company policy ). I managed the complete cycle of the project from timeline to budgets. I worked there for 1 year and 2 months.

Family business: Our family business is of poultry trading which my father started on his own. I had to take responsibility when my father met an accident and that time I was 11 years old. I took over the business for next 6 months and continued from there on. We built a small business into a good recognizable trading name in our area. I worked with my father along with my schooling because it was not a one man job to do as the business was growing. We built our own home from the business and it means a lot to me as we were not very good financially. I worked with my father for 7 years. It was the most valuable learning experience for me as I got the know the value of hard earned money there and got matured before my age. I used to work at my poultry farm in the morning and evening time then my father and I used to go for loading chickens in the trucks at night from the farms of adjacent locality.I come from a very rural part of India and had very normal schooling there, there were very limited opportunities. This was an amazing opportunity which layed the foundation for what I am today.

Volunteer work: I started volunteer work at very early age as my father did a lot of work in the community. I took part in various initiatives like pulse polio campaign, blood camps and hospital camps. I used to do little things in these initiatives when I was very young like arranging drinking water, putting banners or spreading awareness by going door to door as people were not very educated about these things. As I joined college I organized education camps for unprivileged children who could not go to schools due to financial constrains as my friends and I used to go there to take classes and taught whatever we knew. Then I got associated with rotary and the foundation in collaboration with local Gurudwara ( Sikh shrine ) opened a charitable hospital where people get the medical treatment at a very minimal cost. We organize camps every year where doctors from around the world come and do free of cost operations. They do around 500-600 operations for the people who cannot pay for operations and other medical costs. I manage some aspects of the hospitals like forecast for the expenditures, donations etc. I had no special reason behind my volunteer work as I was in place of those people whom we are helping and its like helping yourself.

Extracurriculars: I was the captain of cricket and volleyball teams at school and college levels. In college I headed the entrepreneurship cell where we took various initiatives and organized various conferences.I won various prizes and awards for entrepreneurship ideas and volunteer work in college.

I think I have written too much but didn't know what to write or not.

Thanks once again for your interest and truly appreciate your time.

Regards,
Puneet

Dear Puneet,
First of all thanks for all that additional information. It really helps!

And I want to say that I really like your story. It's very clear and inspiring. As are your goals.

The first thing is to do exactly what you are doing now - work hard for that GMAT because that will be defining.

Now I don't want to evaluate you before your GMAT, but let me say two things. First your school list is overly ambitious. 3 of the 5 schools are Top 5 programs. and you are going to be in the running against IITers with 8.2 GPAS and 770 GMATs. So EVEN if you get a 750, it will not be easy.

Now I don't want to get you down, especially because I really think you have a great story and very interesting work experience, but it is helpful to know what you are realistically up against. And secondly, you can reach your goals without going to Harvard. Don't let anybody else tell you otherwise! But there are plenty of amazing schools out there.

And like I wrote, right now, research the schools in the Top 20. Read the forums. And decide only AFTER you have your GMAT, because it will change things for you, and it will define the right strategy.

Best,
JF

Hi John,

Sorry for the late reply.

Thank you very much for your advise.

I am working on my GMAT as you advised.

Can you please advise me some good General Management programs in Top 20.

I am thinking about class visits and I think it would help me in clearing my thought process about the schools. Will it help?

Are you planning any trip to India? if so do let me know as would love to meet you personally.

I really appreciate your time and interest. It really helped me in clearing some things.

Thanks & Regards,
Puneet

Puneet,
Well most of the schools in the Top 20 are good for general management (Consulting firms hire from all of those schools), so you can select more based on fit.

As for a trip to India, feel free to invite me! :)

I'm kidding. But if I am there, I'll let you know,

Best,
JF
