Did you come across this issue in an actual SC prompt? If so, then you should post the prompt and the answer choices. Beyond just knowing grammar rules, you need to learn the typical "style" rules that the GMAT writers use, and the common patterns in the wrong answer choices. These lessons can only come from seeing grammar rules used in context of full prompts.
