PROFILE OPINION

by jorhul » Tue Oct 28, 2014 4:56 am
Hi,
my request is just a profile check ...

-10 yrs experience in banking/trading
-can show progressive growth throughout time in banking
-MS in IT
-Engg background
-born & lived in various countries
-currently in London
-looking to do an EMBA in top 10 Universities in US / Europe
-Yet to do GMAT - struggling with prep. Left Univ a while back therefore bit of struggle getting back into GMAT.

does that make a decent profile to make it to one of the top 10?

thx

Hi,

You have decent profile to apply for EMBA programs but top 10 will be much competitive unless you work hard on your applications and GMAT. You can also look at 1 year full time MBA options in Europe, since most of the European b-schools have average work experience range between 6-8 yrs. You can try Chances of B-school Tool to assess your chances for top B-School by clicking here https://goo.gl/XV8WeG

A few more perspectives here:
  1. I am assuming here that you've worked on the IT side of banking given your degree? That will determine the strength of the profile. You have also not mentioned your nationality - another factor important for a realistic assessment. Feel free to share those. What level/designation are you on?
  2. The EMBA is usually restricted to the geography you are located in as otherwise travel is not feasible. So the choice will be restricted to where you are employed in. Read here for more on the best EMBAs.
  3. The bar tends to be a tad lower when it comes to EMBAs in general - more driven by demand-supply situation. But without knowing the profile details, it is tough to assess chances at top 10. The GMAT too will play an important role. Any expected score you can share will be useful too
Hope this sparks a few relevant questions

Thanks for the few more details here. With your profile, the top 10 programs in EMBA should be possible at the right GMAT point - provided you have a coherent story about how it will help you. 'Relocating' for the sake of EMBA is usually not feasible unless you can get a job in the same location.

If you havent considered, I would strongly recommend signing up with a professional coaching institute (virtual/physical) for GMAT.

You might also want to look into executive MBA programs. With 10 years of experience you would qualify.
