Wind Resistance... HELP!!!

by melifox » Thu Mar 11, 2010 7:18 pm
Wind resistance created by opening windows while driving results in a fuel penalty as great or greater than is incurred by using air conditioning.

A. as great or greater than is incurred by using air conditioning
B. that is as great or greater than is incurred using air conditioning
C. as great as or greater than that of using air conditioning
D. at least as great as air conditioning's
E. at least as great as that incurred by using air conditioning

I chose D, but that is not the correct answer... somebody please expain.

D is wrong becoz comparison is done here b/n penalty incurred by driving with open windows with air conditioning's
comparison has to be in similar things

for that reason IMO E is correct

C seems to be correct.
here "as great as " is used correctly
and "than that of " compares the fuel panelty correctly.

please suggest if i am correct or not

Since the part before than should be parallel to part after than, we need use "by". With that and that alone, you can eliminate B , C and D.
Between A and E, both use by... however, " as great or greater than" is wordier than "at least as great as". Hence E wins.

lol i was going to say the same as mohit. as great as or greater than is redundant. so with that you can eliminates quite a few choices and then as great as is required so only e fulfills all the prerequisites.

A is incorrect because "as great or greater than" is incorrect. Second issue in A is redundant "is". It doesn't make the choice clearer, rather it makes it wordy.

so A is out.
B retains the idiom mistake so that's out as well.
C corrects the idiom. however, than that of using air conditioning doesn't clearly dictates the meaning. I think, presence of "by" in place of "of" would have made the choice C a strong contender.

D does not look good as it's using possessive, which is generally good for "of constructions" only.

Choice E uses the correct idioms , follows parallelism, and clearly express the intended meaning.

Received a PM asking me to respond. Don't see a source. Please cite the source (author) of the problem so I can respond!

Note to those studying this: if I were you, I would NOT read / study problems that do not have the source cited. There are several very important reasons for this:

1) If you don't know the source, then you don't know whether you are compromising your future practice tests. What if the question is from the practice test you're about to take and now you see a question that you've already seen before? When that happens, it can blow the validity of your whole test! (Not if it happens just once, of course, but what if it happens multiple times?)

2) If you're taking a practice test and do see a question you've seen before, you'll probably answer it more quickly. This will give you a false sense of timing security because you now have a little more time... but that situation will NEVER be replicated on the real test.

3) The source might be bad. Do you want to study from a bad source? I don't!
Please note: I do not use the Private Messaging system! I will not see any PMs that you send to me!!

Quickest approach.

The correct idiom is as X as Y. Eliminate A and B.

In C, of is the wrong preposition: the fuel penalty of using air conditioning makes no sense.

D can be eliminated because we should avoid using possessive constructions for inanimate nouns such as air conditioning. The possessive construction implies that the fuel penalty belongs to the air-conditioning. The intended meaning of the sentence is that air conditioning causes a fuel penalty to be incurred. Eliminate D.

The correct answer is E.

I would be skeptical of an answer choice that uses as great as or greater than. The construction at least as great as is more concise.
