Please give me some advice

by hplass » Sat Aug 23, 2014 2:56 pm
My name is Hans Plass, I am 29 years old, Chilean and have lived in Santiago, Chile during my entire life. I am a business administration graduate from one of the top 5 business schools in Chile. During my college education at Universidad del Desarrollo I always thought that the field that i was interested in was Finance and therefore took courses that positioned me towards that specialty. When i graduated i went on to work at the Chilean State Bank. I worked there for 2 years and had a promotion in which i was in charge of operations, particularly monitoring tellers for the whole network of branch offices. I was then hired as a Trainee for CIAL foods, the largest cured meat and sausages producer in Chile. As a group, they control 40% of the industry through 4 brands. After a year i was offered the position of product manager for the most important brand of the group, San Jorge. A year later i became brand manager of San Jorge, being able to control every aspect of the brand marketing wise. This career switch led me to realize that Marketing was really my calling rather than Finances.

After realising the fact that i wanted to pursue a career in Marketing, specially orientated towards mass-market consumer goods, i also came to the conclusion that i needed further preparation in this field and therefore decided i wanted to complete an MS in Marketing or an MBA with a Marketing concentration.

My GPA is not great, it´s actually pretty bad, its a 2.5. I was very inmature during my early years of college career and even though i showed an upwards trend towards my final years (there are 5 years of college degree in Chile) i wasnt able to overcome that deficit. I am confident i can get 700+ in my GMAT scores and will work towards getting those up to 750 if necessary. I have 5.5 years of work experience and have had an upwards trend during this time in terms of positions held.

My goal is to get accepted into the MS in Marketing at Mays School in Texas A&M. I saw that they only ask for your GPA based on your final 60 hours of credit. I had a 3.0 GPA if you consider the last 60 hours. I would also consider the MS in marketing at UT Dallas. UT Austin would be my dream but since they dont offer a Marketing MS i would have to take the Full-time MBA which of course i would if i was accepted.

Finally, i would like you to offer me some advice in schools that i should be looking into given my story, GPA and GMAT scores. I have family living in Texas and that is why i particularly focused on schools on that state, but i am open to anything really. I ask you to please be very sincere with me and tell me about the real chances that i have of being accepted into any of this programs. This orientation would be of the utmost importance to me given my current goals and i would appreciate it greatly.

Thanks a lot

Hey there good sir,
Well you have a very interesting profile, with vast working experience and some good leadership. So that's the first positive point. I think you coming form Chile, a country from which the schools get very few candidates, will be a big plus too. Also, your career trajectory, in which you are always moving up and forward (although not always in the most traditional way) is really interesting (LOVe the stint int he Chilean State Bank).

I think that even with your terrible GPA, if you can pull a good GMAT, then you would have a shot at Mays. You have the experience and the uniqueness.

Obviously, you should also be thinking about what other schools you would apply to. You have McCombs and Rice in Texas too, and there are several other good schools in the region.
Otherwise, if you have a bit of extras in terms of community service/ extra curricualrs/ entrepreneurship it can always help!

Good luck, and all the best,
Jon
