Hello,

Would appreciate an honest feedback on my chances for a top MBA program and what all I need to do to increase those chances.

Age: 24

We were a team of 8 individuals working together with around 60 odd volunteers.

5)Topped an aptitude test organized during Techfest in college and also won 2 online riddle events. Subsequently became the event coordinator for the online riddle event during next year's fest.

Post-MBA Goals:
1. Short-term : IB/Consulting (I have a strong inclination towards Finance)
2. Long-term : Entrepreneurship (Social entrepreneurship)

Target Schools: ISB, Wharton, Columbia, Kellogg, Booth and unrealistically HBS & Stanford

Are my targets realistic? Please provide your valuable comments.

Thanks and Regards,

Hey Tanuj,
Things are looking pretty good for you.

You have a lot of strengths in your profile:
-Great GMAT!
- NIT Grad!
- With Good GPA!
- Quick upward mobility at work!

And weaknesses?
Only minor ones - your GPA could be a tad higher. Your school could have been IIT :) (I'm sure you are tired of hearing this), and maybe the most important (because it's easily fixable) your work experience at two years is a wee bit on the low side (although you can still apply this year if you feel it's the right time)

I think however, that your goals are not good. The sine qua non of having IB goals is to have IB experience. And move from Tech to IB, is what 90% of Indian candidates want to do (before we correct their error :) ). But it is a mistake because 1) It's not justifiable 2) They are very hard jobs to get even if it IS justifiable 3) It can come across as sound like "all I want is more money".

Instead, I'd suggest sticking to your industry/function but moving up, if it appeals to you.

Your school list is however, a bit on the tough side, and I would strongly suggest adding two schools in the 10-20 range. They are awesome schools with great employment opportunities, and will help you balance your application strategy to ensure an admit this year.

I hope this all makes sense, and if you have anything else, just drop a line!

Best,
JF

Thanks Jon@Admissionado for your valuable insights.

I did a bit of research regarding my goals as that was the area which was raising the flag.

IB is out of the list now, I would like to focus on Marketing/Strategy Consulting or Brand/Product Management once I get admitted. I feel these tracks would be helpful in pursuing my ultimate goal of becoming an entrepreneur. But since, Consulting is what almost all Indian applicants want to do Post-MBA, I am afraid , I wont be able to stand out in terms of goals.

PE/VC was another area I did a bit of research in (FYI : just because of the dynamic nature of the job and not for the money) and as it turns out, these are extremely hard jobs to get even with a Finance background, so AdComs would need a lot of convincing from my end about my eligibility, seriousness etc. to pursue this track.

Baseline is that I want to switch my career from IT as I have realized after two years in the field that I am passionate about Business. I typically want a job(for short term), that is more dynamic in nature. And I want to use my MBA experience to really explore all the opportunities there are in the Business field. And isn't the whole point of an MBA experience to explore, expand and develop a new understanding and awareness of one's abilities and passions?

Please suggest if Product Management if unique enough a goal for the AdComs or if you could suggest me some valid tracks which will make me stand out in the application process, I would really be grateful.

Thanks in advance!

Hey there,
So sorry for the delayed answer here dude. I was on the road for a while and juuuust got back.

But lemme answer your post:

In terms of goals actually, you don't necessarily get "Brownie points" for being original. (although being original DOES help a lot in your writing and experience). In terms of your goals, FAR more important than their being original is their being SENSIBLE, and PROBABLE.

So for example, your goal of PE/VE would be a bad one because it is not only not original, but it is also highly unlikely, and highly insensible (this doesn't mean of course that it won't happen! I'm just talking about applications here.

On the other hand, some sort of strategy consulting or product management are far more logical and far more reasonable goals than the PE/VC for example. And either could work. I personally wouldn't worry too much about consulting being an unoriginal goal. After all something like 30-40% of most Top Bschool graduates go into consulting. So although original, it is not, it does make a good deal of sense.

Does that help?
I hope so...
