680, very low IR, apply?

by kartikc11 » Fri Sep 06, 2013 4:14 am
Hi there,

I recently took my Gmat, score a 680 (47Q, 36V), got a 5.0 in AWA but a measly 1 in IR. I am planning on applying for 2014. I have been working for a consultancy for the past 2 years, and the reason for the low IR was nerves. the section is precariously placed when your nerves are highest.
Does this warrant a retake? I am looking to apply to the following schools:
stern
Haas
Kellogg
Tuck
Duke
HEC
Darden

please let me know!

Well, it's not so much the IR that is problematic, but the main score, which is lower then the average at ALL of the schools on your list.
Plus you have only two years experience.

Retake, get 30+ points higher and apply next year.

Alright, thank you for getting back to me. What would you say about joining a MIM course in Europe?

Well, it depends. Is an MiM the right course for you? How much work experience do you have?

If you wanted to apply with this score, you could also decide to compromise a bit on your school list for regular MBAs. There are plenty of other fantastic programs out there!

Hi guys,

So i retook the GMAT and now have a 710 with an 8 on the IR. I currently have three years of work experience in a healthcare consultancy. I plan on applying by next year, so I will have 4 years by the time I apply and then 5 years by the time I go for the MBA.
What options can I realistically look at? I am now looking only at an MBA since I am gaining very relevant experience

There you go! That's more like it!
Congrats dude, that's a real game-changer you got there.
Where can you apply? It will depend on your work experience, your school, your grades, everything. But now at least the top 30 programs are open for you (if you tell me more about the above, I can advise you as to whether it's top 10, top 20 or top 30). So looking gooood!

Provide me a wee bit more background info, and we can take this further,
Best,
JF

Thank you!!

Okay so here goes,

Work Experience:

- 3 Years currently in a consulting firm. One promotion (Total of 6 levels of hierarchy, I'm on the second)
- Like i said, I plan on applying by next year to the top 15

Academics:

- Gmat : 710 (Q48, v38, AWA 6, IR 8)
- Engineering - cleared with distinction (we don't have a GPA system - Mumbai University)
- Currently pursuing a Masters in English Literature through distance learning while I work. Will be done with the course by the time I take admission into a B school in 2016. This is purely a passion project

Extra Curriculars:

College: Events head for technical festivals. Head of Events for a social service initiative started by the government of India. Robotics etc...

Office:
-President of the corporate chapter of Toastmasters ( a global forum for public speaking and leadership). As president, conducted multiple office wide events. Currently creating a module to help the new guys get accustomed to our work culture.
- Part of the recruitment activities. Working on developing new case studies to better evaluate new candidates.
- Leading various other activities within various tracks in the office. Gained a lot of traction with various people in the firm.
- The module I mentioned in point 1 is actually a huge initiative and the management is very excited that we thought of this and are implementing it

Sports:

- Played district level tennis at some point but i don't think that will count here since that was when I was like 12!

There are a lot more minor points that I haven't included above. So there you go, my applications in a gist :)

Please let me know. And thanks again for all your help!!

Hey there,
Thanks for writing back.
So with all you got, it seems like 10-30 should be about right for you. I'd go for a relatively wide spread within this range of schools that appeal to you most. There's not one bad school in the Top 30, so no need to worry about making any mistakes :)

Top 10 will probably be a bit of a stretch for you though. If you have a school that you really like, you should for sure go for it, but I would suggest against your list with top 10 schools, as it might be a bit too challenging.

Hope this helps!
Best,
Jon

US News and World report. :)
They are the standard (although the others have their advantages too)

Sorry to bug you more, but I really want to look at Tuck as a realistic chance. I do love the college and from the interactions with the alumni and current students, I think it fits perfectly with what i want to do. How do you think I fare for Tuck?

Well, if you really love Tuck, give them a shot. One thing that is nice about Tuck is that they are quite responsive to people who are really in love with the school (I mean you STILL have to have the profile.... buuuut), so if you can show them the love, they might like it.
Best,
Jon
