OG 13 : Q 50

by sinsofgmat » Mon Apr 14, 2014 7:38 pm
According to some analysts, the gains in the stock market reflect growing confidence that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come in for a "soft landing," followed by a gradual increase in business activity."
Hi,

I have a simple question, what is the past participle "followed...activities" modifying?
Can a past participle in any scenario modify preceding clause?

Experts please help.

Generally, COMMA + VERBed serves to modify the preceding noun.
Here, followed serves to modify a soft landing.
The conveyed meaning is that the SOFT LANDING will be FOLLOWED by a gradual increase in business activity.
