Evaluation Please!

by cambo1231 » Wed Dec 18, 2013 1:39 pm
Hi,

I just took the GMAT and am starting to research into where to look to get my MBA starting in 2015. I would really appreciate feedback so I can better understand where I sit and if there is anything else I need to work on.

GMAT: 700

GPA: 3.5 in Finance w/ minor in Economics at Texas A&M

President and Coach for 2 years for Texas A&M Club Water Polo Team (received Texas A&M Club Sports Outstanding officer award)

Treasurer of Men's Service and Leadership Organization

Financial Leadership and Development Program for Raytheon (2 years with 1 year being on the Corporate Strategy Team). Financial Analyst for Raytheon after finishing FLDP

Member of Dallas Junior Chamber of Commerce (Volunteer work and professional development activities)
White male, age 25

I want to switch out of a stagnant/declining defense industry into strategy consulting

Looking at Northwestern, Wharton, Columbia, NYU, Virginia, Texas, Duke

Thanks!

Hey dude,
Things look pretty good for you. The only slight negative I see is your 2 years of work experience, which anyhow will be two and 8 months when you apply, so you should be fine. You have good grades from a good school, good work in a good industry, and a very good GMAT, so all is in order.

Your career change should make some sense, so even if you are going to change industries, if you stick to the same function (financial analyst) then you should have no problem at all selling that. I think your school list is excellent as you have some much tougher and much easier schools on it, and it's a nice range.

Basically other than preparing your essays, I think you are good to go for next year. You MAY want to visit all the schools on your list before you apply. It helps in sooo many ways (both in terms of decisions you need to make about your life and in terms of knowledge/contacts from the schools), I can only advise it as a worthwhile investment.

Best,
JF
