Hi,

It would be great if you could share your thoughts on my profile.
Only bschools of my interest are Kellogg, Goizueta, Cornell, ISB (all 1 year programs).

5+ years full time IT jobs of which 1 yr is in US.
Started my own website but due to other commitments, could not proceed with marketing it.
No Lead experience as of now.

Xth - 85.3%

XIIth - 81.8%

BE (Electronics) - 67% (with backlogs Sad )

Work wise I am exceptionally good, rated best by employers, will hopefully get good references.

Extra Cs-

Social service through company

Skating champion

Marathon runner

Brain stormed various fun initiatives in current company

Post MBA goals - Technology Management

I want to do a 1year program only due to time and family commitments.
Pls let me know which schools are a good target, thanks!
I will prep well for my GMAT, how much score should I target to get into one of the above, how do I strengthen my app?

Also, is it ok if I mention to the AdCom following as the reason for my low Engg %age - I was never interested in Engg but went along, but once I joined I love working in this sector and want to target Technology Consulting or Marketing, is it ok to be honest that I did not like Engg but like herd mentality joined it, or am I attracting eyes towards my low Undergrad %age by doing this?

Your inputs are much appreciated!

Sorry, I should've been more specific. Here you go...

28/F
Bachelor of Engg (Electronics & Comm), (non-IIT from India) - 69%
I work as a Software Engineer, worked for 2 Indian IT giants and 1 US company, total 5 yrs +, no lead experience, have been switching companies and places on account of husband's job.
I have constantly been rated among the best in all companies I worked for.
Volunteering - Worked through company's social service campaign, personally I am a very helpful person, I and my father contributed a lot to various NGOs in form of monetary funds, I have a young kid, took a break after her birth but now again looking for other volunteering opportunities. I have good Extra Cs as in Skating, Cycling, Marathons etc...

Hope this helps!
Thank you for the prompt reply, I appreciate it.

Hey there,
Your profile looks preeeetty good, but you might be a bit ambitious with your school list there. Your big plus is that you are a female candidate, but as a non IIT with not great UG GPA even with an amazing GMAT (I mean 740+) Kellogg and Cornell will be very tough. Goizueta should be more reasonable. And ISB maybe somewhere between (they need female candidates I have heard! ;) )

The biggest danger of your profile is in its looking "Standard". I mean even the way you approach your job in this post sounds a bit like that - IT Job in software... aha! but WHAT did you do? What was your position? What interesting achievements? The schools aren't gonna care about your coding expertise, but they will care about how much value you have brought to the firm, how fast you have been promoted, how good of a team leader and/or player you are, and so on... and the thing to think about is: What can I write in my application that will make me UNIQUE!?

Hope this helps out!

Jon,

I added more info to my profile, posted below. Do you think I stand a chance in Ivy League schools? Thanks much!

Bio -
Indian female 28yrs

Acads -
Xth - 81.8%
XIIth - 85.3%
Bachelor of Engg. (Electronics & Communications) - 67% (Non-IIT)
GMAT practice tests average - 760
Yet to give the real thing

Work Experience - 6+ years
Indian IT experience - 4 years
US IT experience - 2 yr
Started and launched a website, however, due to time constraints and personal commitments, could not work on marketing or promoting the site. - 6 months

Extra Cs -
Won medals for skating competitions - District level.
Participated in Swimming competitions, dance, debate - school level.
Significant part of my company's social service initiative.
Gathering funds for college meets.
Various charitable campaigns
Volunteer work in USA for NGO.
Struggled with weight issues, lost weight and became a marathon runner.
Husband and I involved in healthcare charity events conducted by me.

Other points -
Constantly rated among the best in the company. Hopefully should get good references.
Funding should not be an issue.
Affluent family background.
I wasn't a good undergrad student, never understood electronics, understood my thing was Computers once I started working in IT companies. I excelled in my field and am a pro at what I do.

My questions -
Pls let me know my chances of an MBA at Ivy league schools.
If not, which are my best bets?
I think my negative is undergrad GPA, how do I work on compensating it with something else?
I am looking for 2015 intake.
Should I even mention my website startup, I never promoted or marketed it as I think it needs more finishing.
I am interested in Retail Operations. However, I know its not related to my work experience, I do not mind IT management either, I would eventually want to set up my own company, be it related to IT or healthcare due to the family of doctors I have. I am yet to figure this part out.

Thank you for going through my thread.
Your inputs are much appreciated.

You have some really good stuff here, especially with the Extra Cs and the volunteer work. For evaluating your chances though, I'd say at this point, let's hold out till you get your ACTUAL GMAT score and see what we can do with that, otherwise things tend to remain theoretical.

When will you be taking your test?

Hi Jon,
I am scheduled for GMAT in May. We are off on a vacation and then even though I know I am doing pretty good now but wanted to finish Kaplan 800 before I take my exam.

So its May but can't stop thinking of applications and essays and schools.
