Ratio Problem

by zagcollins » Sun Jul 20, 2008 6:07 am
In a certain English class, 1/4 of the number of girls is equal to 1/6 of the total number of students. What is the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls in the class?

A.1 to 4
B.1 to 3
C.1 to 2
D.2 to 3
E.2 to 1

My method of solving it...

As we are dealing with 1/6 ratio, lets pick an easy number...say 60...

Total no. of students=60

The problem says 1/4 of total girls is equal to 1/6 of total students..1/6 of 60 is 10...so 1/4 girls are also 10...so total no. of girls is 40...Hence, no. of boys is 20 (60-40)...Therefore, the boy-girl ratio is 20/40=1/2.
