“There is only one definition of success—to be able to spend your life in your own way.”

The issue of defining the true nature of success is a controversial one. On the one hand many people argue that success means to be able to live life according to our terms while others believe that one achieves success by helping everyone around them succeed. I will argue that success can not be simply defined as spending our life in his our way but rather in living our life in such a way as to bring joy and happiness to everyone around us.

Main reason for my belief is that man is a social animal. Society defines rules which govern our lives. If we do not abide by these rules and do as we please then the basic structures of the society will be weakened. For e.g. lets look at the institution of marriage which is governed by a set of rules and vows. A marriage succeed not when each individual live life as they please but when they live and share life with their partners, at times going against one's personal interests and doing things that makes the partner happy.

Another reason is the fact that families form the core of our society. Each family is based on the basics of sharing and sacrificing for the other members of the family. If living life on own terms was the only definition of success then every parent who has sacrificed so much for their children will be an example of a failed individual because they lived their life for their family rather than living it on their own way.

Moreover, many successful individuals that are known through out history are the ones that did not live life on their own way but rather lived life for the other and for the betterment of the society. Some of the prominent examples are Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, George Washington, JF Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. etc. These individual are deemed successful because they have sacrificed a lot for their people and lived their life to make people around them happy and successful.

However, many people argue that living life on own terms is the only way to define success because that the only way to achieve happiness and success but they fail to notice so many parents out their who have lived life for their children and today feel that they have been a great success. These people fail to see the great national leaders, scientists, martyrs who have sacrificed so much for the love of their country and not lived life as they pleased but still are considered greater success than any individual who lived life his own way.

Finally, I have argued that success can not be defined just as living life as one pleases but living it in a manner so as to make people around us successful. If society lives by this principal then it will lead to a more successful society and will lead to a more peaceful and successful world.
