Artificial intelligence emerged during the late 1950’s as an academic discipline based on the assumption that computers are able to be programmed to think like people.
(A) are able to be programmed to think like people
(B) were able to be programmed to think as people
(C) can be programmed to think as people can
(D) could be programmed to think like people

according to manhuttan sc -
like should be used to compare people or things (any nouns)
as should be used in a comparison involving clauses.
the sentence above doesnot compare "computers" with "people" but it compares " the ability of computers to think" (which can be similar to) with " the ability of people to think".
hence we have to use "as" here.
so eliminate A,D n E.
in B, the last part - as people is incomplete.
C, correctly, completes the sentence - as people can (think - redundant).
hence IMO C.
Thanks! |

D is correct
able, capable is used to say of person's ability not possibility, so there is only c, d left
c is wrong because the recovery from ellipsis is " people can be programmed" is wrong. |
