Need profile evaluation (urgent)

by nitmba » Sun Jun 17, 2012 11:48 pm
Last time i Submitted i was told i didnt provide enough details for anyone to review, hence resubmitting. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Educational Background:

I graduated from IIT (one of the premier institute in the country for engineering) in 2008. However my gpa was a bit on the lower side, and that's why I particularly made sure I score well in my GMAT (760)
During our college days I was the Mess Secretary in my hostel. The responsibility included : managing relationship with Mess workers, inspecting the quality of food bought for the mess etc. I also was involved into dramatics, scripting and directing plays till my 4th year, was an actor only till the 2nd year. I wasn't really interested in acting but, I did it in order to overcome my being introvert.

Professional Background:
In 2008 when I passed out of IIT, I joined an outsourcing analytics startup Mu Sigma (which has become really successful now). I had two offers with Mu Sigma being the less paying but I still opted for Mu Sigma cause, I was interviewed by the CEO of the company and I was impressed by him.
While I started my career being a Business Analyst, I wanted to learn more about how to grow a business, so I joined the Sales team to work with the CEO. I was the only non MBA person selected for the role and later I helped to grow the team to a 4 member team (by showcasing the success that can be achieved)

Parallel, I was also Core Team member of an NGO called the Indian Youth Climate Network, being their Funding Coordinator (tenure being 1 year). We finished with 3 flagship project during my tenure. During my tenure with IYCN I realized the solving India's social problems was much more complex than the corporate problems and I realized that this is what I would want to do in the long run. I figured that these problems can be solved either by creating jobs or by designing effective policies
Hence joined an entrepreneurial venture with a technology focused team to help them in their sales and business development effort. I wanted to implement what I learnt at Mu Sigma and help another similar company achieve growth using my skills. (however this venture didn't pan out well and I quit the job in 8 months much to the dislike of the CEO) but at the same time I wasn't being fully utilized and I didn't see myself as a right cultural fit for the organization.

I was looking for a job but none excite me as much, so I decided I will explore my other interest policy making. Hence right now I am working as a Swaniti Fellow with a member of Parliament helping him plan how to use his capital for maximum benefit of his constituency. This is a 3 month fellowship

Concerns:
"¢ Lack of a famous brand name on resume except IIT Bombay
"¢ There is a gap of 3 months between my last job and my starting the fellowship ( I was working as a freelancer, I don't want to mention that, its something I did for cash)

Main theme of my story:

Not been afraid to take unconventional decision to work towards my goal(against popular opinions). Experience in the corporate, startup, social as well political space in the country. I wanted to maximize my knowledge of difference sectors as I believe the world would be much more integrated with government, business and society interacting much more closely, hence future leaders should be able to understand the complexity and working of all 3 to lead effectively.

Why MBA :

My experience has taught me that strong analytical skill, access to smart people and capital are 3 most important resources to push your agenda forward. I think I have strong analytical skills but MBA can provide me with a strong network and build on my reputation, thus maximizing my chances to fulfill my goals and expectations from myself.

Well this time around it looks like you made up for it by giving a VERY detailed profile, and we will try and do you justice, my friend.

So first of all 760 +IIT is a killer beginning. As you know, IIT is the school that most Indian candidates are pulled from for top programs. So you are off to a good start. another big plus that we don't see TOO much of, esp. given your experience is that you have a REAL team and REAL leadership. You gotta play this up HEAVILY when you apply, because it WILL help!

Your 3-month job gap may not be too much of a problem, but more of a concern will be: what after the fellowship???

This is something that needs to be well thought out, esp in terms of the goals you will present to the AdCom. It basically needs to all somehow fit in more or less into a linear progression (so the Adcom doesn't see you as "the guy who needs the job"..

Other than that, do what you can to be PASSIONATE, CURIOUS, UNIQUE in your essays. That, plus your strong basis should give you a shot.
