Number properties

Hi guys,

Another confusing number properties question. Please help me solve this.

The numbers x and y are not integers. The value of x is closest to which integer?

1) 4 is the integer that is closest to x+y.
2) 1 is the integer that is closest to x-y.

The are both insufficient by themselves as x and y could be any numbers...

You can set up inequalities with the information in each statement

1) 3.5 < x + y < 4.5
2) 0.5 < x - y < 1.5

You can add inequalities like this to get:

4 < 2x < 6 or 2 < x < 3

You can't tell if x is closer to 2 or 3. Answer = E
