I think the worst thing about A is the second "its" (...its extinction). We don't know what "it" is - is the the T-rex, or is it the superior? Always be on the lookout for ambiguous pronouns!

A was encountered by its superior
A encountered its superior

Different meanings and I think (A) is passive (was encountered)
