All,

hi - just joined, and have scrolled through the most recent posts and ran a quick search without finding the answer to the basic question above - if there is another thread on this please direct me to it by all means....

I'll spare the gory details but I took the GMAT yesterday and got a disappointing 600. The Business Schools in the UK I am interested in ask for minimum 600, so at least I'm there - but my practice tests were leading me to expect 650+.

I know I had a 'bad day at the office' yesterday, for various reasons, and after a break, and better prep I am convinced I can get a better score.

My main question is - is it worth it?

Given that 600 is enough - you may say no, don't bother - but I'm planning to self-finance and was hoping that a strong GMAT score would help with applications for scholarships and so on. I believe I have a strong application with excellent work experience, references etc (GMAT score apart!) and having a shot at a scholarship could make the difference between going for a better school with higher fees and a cheaper option.

So I guess it's a two pronged question - will a better GMAT score help my chances, and - will the business schools simply take an average of the two scores - as I have read elsewhere. I.e to get a standout 700, I'd need an 800? (unrealistic given my quant weaknesses....).

Any thoughts appreciated, and thanks for reading.

Dear Martin:

I would encourage you to retake the GMAT to try to increase your score. Not only for purposes of being admitted, but especially if you wish for any scholarship package. Most schools do not average your GMAT scores--they use the higher total score for evaluative purposes. In the event you do not get your score up 50+ points, I think you should submit an additional essay addressing your score and identifying other parts of your background that demonstrate your aptitude (i.e., coursework, work experiences, etc.).

thanks for this and the AWA answer.

It's definitely made up my mind to give the GMAT another go - a couple of weeks break to recharge the mind, and then I'll re-assess my preparation strategies and go for it again - much wiser for the experience.
