Equation. pls explain why

by prameko » Thu Apr 17, 2008 12:53 pm
Why my solution is incorrect?

Zigfield bought his car using M% of his bank savings. He also bought a house that costs 4 times the price of the car. What is the price of the house?
(1) M = 12.
(2) The price of the car and the house was $140,000.

The best answer is C.
With statement (1) we know that the car cost 12% of his life savings.
From statement (1) and (2) we know that (12 x 4 = 48) percent of his life savings went to the house. 60% of his life savings is $140,000. From here we know how much were his life savings and so we know that 48% of that went to the house. Both statements are needed.

I think

(1) is insuffucient
(2) I got -- Car+House = 140000 (eq1),
and from the question I can got House = 4*Car (eq2)

from (2) I can solve for C and H

What's wrong????

Good DS Q :)

Ans is B I think because

Lets say car = $X
then house = $4X

total = $5X = $140,000

so X = 28,000

hence house = $112,000

B is sufficient to answer the Q

The answer to the question you posted is definitely (b) - statement (2) alone is sufficient.

Are you sure that you posted the question correctly? Where did you find this question? Posting the source is always a good idea, so people know how accurate the question is likely to be.

Stuart I think what he is saying is that he thinks the Ans is C but the OA is B and he is trying to figure out where he is going wrong.

I got from GMAT 800. It says the answer is C. I just wonder if something wrong in the question or I solve incorrect, But u all think B like me.
