Dear deckardbr:

I think your concerns are valid as Columbia is a highly competitive program. You will need to explain your career path and why the MBA makes sense in this path (both as the next step and the timing). Likewise, how does what you have done in the past lead you to what you want to do post-mba? As for extra-curriculars, you do have some things you can talk about, but if there is an opportunity to get involved in an activity you are really interested in, then do it now so you will have a good amount of time prior to the application deadline.

It is important to visit the program and get to know the admissions staff. If you can't get to the campus, then take advantage of every opportunity to meet with someone in person that you can. Lastly, you need a strong GMAT score and a strong application submitted in the first round.

Best of luck to you!
Lisa

Dear Andrea:

A major career change is not a negative as about 2/3 of MBAs are getting the MBA to make a change. You just need to conscisely explain your path to date and what has led you to determine the MBA is the next step. Then you will need to describe your post-MBA goals and how the program's curriculum, etc. plus your background (professional or otherwise) will help you get there. So, if your desired post-MBA industry is completely different but the interest sparked through either a professional or extracurricular experience, that is great. You just want to convey your thoughts and demonstrate how/why the MBA is part of the path. The key is to be communicate a solid rationale, conscisely and positively.

There are some great resources on essay assistance out there. You might find them helpful as you start to write your essays.

Good luck!
Lisa

Actually, the chance of admissions depends highly on MBA essays.
