Online Version Really That Bad?

Hi,

I've been studying for a while out of the OG. On paper, I'm doing really well. I tried the CD that came with Kaplan's book today, and my scores plummeted. Is the actual format of the GMAT really that awful - what with the blinking scrollbar, having to scroll through everything, and the awful glare? Any tips on additional online practice?

Hi there,

Which kaplan cd are you using? ALso, Kaplan as tougher than OG. Teh second half of the OG questions will be most real. This is my opinion and can be argued either way. But for the most part, stick to the hard material so on G day it can be a good day!

I've never looked at the Kaplan cats because they have a bad reputation on this forum. Download the GMATPrep software and do some of the practice question sets that come with it and go through the review material. That software has the exact same user interface as the real exam so you'll know what to expect when you do take the real exam.

Wow, thanks for the information. I didnt know that. When do you justify a time to take the paper tests? I have focused mostly so far on mahatan gmat and think its a good idea to take a paper exam. Whats your advice?

I don't think the paper tests are worth it. The same questions are mostly in the OG, and you really need to do timed tests on the computer -- the computer adaptive tests. GMATPrep and Princeton Review tests are adaptive and much better than Kaplan. Your experience with your score plummeting on a Kaplan test is a pretty common one. Don't sweat it!

In my experience, the PR tests were the next closest thing to GMATPrep.

FYI - don't take the old paper tests as practice tests where you calculate your score and think that it will predict your score on the CAT. The two versions are COMPLETELY different and the experience of taking a paper test will NOT prepare you to take the CAT.

You can use the problems from old paper tests as practice problems, but don't take it as a "full test experience." And you should exhaust OG before you ever use the paper tests, as the paper questions are a minimum of 11 years old. (And, really, if you're studying the right way, you don't need to go much beyond OG in terms of real questions - there are 1,400 questions in the three current OG books and that's plenty for anyone who is doing high-quality study of the questions.)
