Disaster in GMAT

by pav278 » Sat Dec 09, 2006 9:00 am
Hi,

I took the GMAT today and scored a 580 (Q-41, v-29)! Three weeks back in my first powerprep test I scored 660. Last week though I scored only 570 in the second powerprep test. Sad fact is that when I took the test in Dec 2000 my score was 640. I actually took the test twice in 2000 and scored the exact same score!

I plan to take the test again in end of Dec or 1st week of Jan.

Any tips on what I can do to improve my score?

Thanks.

Hi Pav278:

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't reach your goal today for your GMAT. What is the score that you are trying to achieve.

Since you have decided to re-take, the first thing you should do is to form a study plan. I would look at my GMAT blog: https://www.beatthegmat.com as one example of what an effective study plan could look like. Also, since you are taking the test in about a month, check out this post on how to prepare in under a month: https://www.beatthegmat.com/viewtopic.php?t=98

My advice to you is to figure out where your strengths and weaknesses are, and tactically focus on improving your weaknesses. Examples of weaknesses could be: subject matter (idiom SCs), timing/pace, or environmental (easily distracted by others).

If you have any questions or hesitations going forward, please voice your comments on this forum! We're here to help!

Best of luck!

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your reply!

I did not know that I can not retake the test in 31 days! Now that my business school deadlines (for next round) will be over by the time I
retake the test, I have been forced to shelve my application plans for 2007.

 That may be good for me in one way that I can plan longer and study for more time before I take the test again.

Although a non-native English speaker, I have graduated from a top social science school in UK ten years back. I have been working since then.

720 is my target. Anything below 700 will not do for me. I plan to take the test in February 2007. But this time I want to pick a date only after I am satisfied I have covered enough material.

I have gone through your blog, as much as I could gather in the first read, it seems to have loads of very useful information.

For my previous test my preparation has been limited to GMAT OG 11 edition (I did not finish all of it) and GMAT Verbal (did not finish) & Math (finished fully) reviews. I guess I have to look for more material, such as Kaplan 800.

I have been trying to download sc, cr and rc questions from topscore, but seem to get an error page all the time. I will try again.

I shall be in touch and hope to make meaningful use of the resources available in your website and blog.

Regards,
