OG 11 - CR Q15

by Auzbee » Fri Dec 21, 2007 1:35 am
Hi All,
Here's the question from OG11/CR15. I do not agree with the provided explanation.

A researcher studying drug addicts found that, on average, they tend to manipulate other people a great deal more than nonaddicts do. The researcher concluded that eeople who frequently manipulate other people are likely to become addicts.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the researcher's conclusion?
a. After becoming addicted to drugs, drug addicts learn to manipulate other people as a way of obtaining drugs.
b. when they are imprisoned, drug addicts often use their ability to manipulate other people to obtain better living conditions.
c. Some nonaddicts manipulate other peoople more than some addicts do.
d. People who are likely to become addicts exhibit unusual behavior patterns other than frequent manipulation of other people.
e. The addicts that the researcher studied were often unsuccessful in obtaining what they wanted when they manipulated other people.

I will post the answer in a day or two after reading your explanations. Please do not provide the same rationale/wording as given in OG11.

The argument shows a causal relationship i.e. A causes B. or A precedes B

In his case If you are manipulative, you become a drug addict.

Here is a strategy I work with for these type of questions. In most questions (not all) where there is a causal relationship, the correct answer is the one that shows that the relationship is wrong or the other way around. i.e B causes A.

Hope this helps!

Or " they exhibit behaviour except frequent manipulation ??"

A is the most suitable option in this case.
