New BTG MeetUp Page

by beatthegmat » Tue Jun 08, 2010 12:57 pm
Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that Beat The GMAT has set up a new meeting tool via MeetUp.com. MeetUp.com has a nice platform for setting up in-person meetings, so it seemed like a good fit for our community.

Anyone can schedule a meet up. Either go to: https://www.meetup.com/beat-the-gmat/

Or, click on the MeetUp widget on the sidebar of this website--you can't miss it, it's black with a map on it. Hope our community members get to meet each other in person more frequently!

All the best,

Eric

I created a MeetUp for Pittsburgh in Robinson Township. I hope there are some other Pittsburgh members on beatthegmat that will attend!

Hey Eric,
This is what I was looking for....although I have one suggestion cum question.
Can we add or provide MBA events meetup through this page. Actually I am trying to get some information about MBA events or MBA school related meetup in INDIA but so far no success. If people can give this infromation through this page or you can add some functionality to give this information on BTG, that would be a great help.

I hope I am making sense here.
Thanks and Regards,
Varun

Hey Varun, thanks for the suggestion--I'd love to chat some more about this here. I was initially thinking that this MeetUp tool would be best used for members to meet other members around the world. I'm a bit ambivalent about the idea of scheduling BTG meetups for other school's events, but I definitely see the need. If we went down that route, I feel like it should be something we do with b-schools' permission.

What do you think? I'm very open to feedback, thanks man!

I don't really know... I mean the point is to keep people informed. I'm pretty confident schools won't mind it if we spread the word on their presentations/info sessions - their ultimate goal is to reach out to as many people as possible.
Of course, we wouldn't be able to provide event publicity for each and every school - maybe just top 10-20. That's still something, though, from two standpoints:
- the meetup window might get crowded enough that some relevant events are missed by prospective students
- keeping track will be an issue

Eric,

I might have used the wrong thread to put up this question but as a frequent BTG user I can see the requirement of putting a mechanism to give the BTG members an authenticated place to look for MBA school events/sessions in different continents.
Let me give you one example to strengthen my case here, Last month there was a school event in Banglore,India and I came to know about this from one BLOG Post published on BTG after the event. I was looking to attend these kinds of events and because I could not get timely information about this event I missed that event.
I might be wrong here because somebody can say that I should go to different school sites and look for the events. But as a working professional sometimes it is pretty difficult to surf through so many college sites.
Frankly speaking I only follow BTG for my GMAT related queries and as a member of this forum I would be glad to have some section which can give me information about MBA/GMAT events in different continents (Or you can implement some functionality to give information on the basis on location, as I can get information about the events planned in India).

Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks and Regards,
Varun

Hey Varun,

You've convinced me that we need to build an MBA calendar. I spoke to David about this, and we're going to build this on our own. For the MeetUp.com widget, let's leave that for member-to-member interactions only; I think the feature you propose deserves it's own special treatment. More to come!

Thanks so much for the suggestion!!
