Difficult Math Question #46 - Arithmetic

For a certain company, operating costs and commissions totaled $550 million in 1990, representing an increase of 10 percent from the previous year. The sum of operating costs and commissions for both years was
(A) $1,000 million
(B) $1,050 million
(C) $1,100 million
(D) $1,150 million
(E) $1,155 million

Let x be the operating a commission costs the year before

x * 1.1 = 550m

x = 500m

550m + 500m = 1050m

therefore B

the quickest way to solve this problem is to try a conversion factor

550 represents 110%

so...

550 x 10% = 500 500+550 = 1050
110%



note: 550 being on top of 110% represents 550/110%
