Hey everyone,

Knewton has received an early shipment of the 12th Edition of the GMAT Review (The Official Guide), so we wanted to share with you some early details about what you can find in the new book. More to come! (Update: Verbal Analysis here!)

Here is a first look at the number of new and repeated questions in the Math section of the OG:

TOTAL (MATH):

11th Edition: 404 questions
12th Edition: 404 questions

New questions in 12th Edition: 146 (36%)
Repeated questions in 12th Edition: 258 (64%)

PROBLEM SOLVING:

11th Edition: 249 questions
12th Edition: 230 questions

New questions in 12th Edition: 52 (23%)
Repeated questions in 12th Edition: 178 (77%)
Questions deleted from 11th Edition: 71 (29%)

DATA SUFFICIENCY:

11th Edition: 155 questions
12th Edition: 174 questions!

New questions in 12th Edition: 94 (54%)
Repeated questions in 12th Edition: 80 (46%)
Questions deleted from 11th Edition: 75 (48%)

As you can see, the total number of questions has not changed, but there are now 19 fewer Problem Solving questions and 19 more Data Sufficiency questions. We think this is great, since, in our experience, most students have more trouble with the DS section.

There are also many more new DS questions (94) than there are PS questions (52). Here is a complete list of the new questions in each section (question numbers in the 12th Edition).

Stay tuned for our analysis of the Verbal Section, coming soon. Let us know if you have specific questions we can look into!

<sigh>
My question about this (and I believe it's a fundamental question) is: are the problems different in content or only in numbers? I believe that this is really important, since if you change the numbers of a problem, but still test the same type of issue, there isn't much of a difference.
However, if the type of problems is different (i.e. testing different concepts), then there might be some issues.

Hi Jose,
I have one question, do you see any paper based questions in new set of questions? How many questions are in hard bins for each section?

Hi,

Any idea whether these questions are from Official GMAT Math review book. If these extra questions from math review then its not sensible for people who have math review book to buy this. Any idea abt that ?

Cheers,
San

I would recommend everybody to purchase the GMAT FOCUS tests on www.mba.com

This alone will be the best investment you can make to get the feeling of "current" DS and PS question levels and find out what your scoring range is..

This exercise is silly. This is like studying a ten-year-old map to figure out how to get around a new city. The whole reason GMAC is willing to share these questions is because they're retired.

I think that anyone who takes this exercise seriously is fooling themselves.

If you take a real GMAT, you'll appreciate that the available retired questions are the most similar available to what you see on the real test. I'll agree with you that one 'reason GMAC is willing to share these questions is because they're retired' - they certainly would not be willing to share questions which are still in the current live question pool, and understandably so. Still, there are many conceptual commonalities among retired and live questions, and if you can understand how to solve every available retired question, you're virtually certain to do well on test day.

Ian, I agree with all of what you said. My argument is that trying to divine where the test is going, because the OG has 19 more data sufficiency questions than before, is kind of pointless.

I see what you mean - I misunderstood your original point. I agree - the best way to determine where the real GMAT is going is by looking at real GMAT tests. It is the case that the proportion of Quant questions which are DS has risen over the past few years, however, and it is perhaps not coincidental that this shift is reflected in the new balance of question types in the 12th edition of the OG. I'd be less confident drawing conclusions about topic balance from small shifts in distribution of topics in the new OG - perhaps that's meaningful, perhaps not.

Well, under my humble opinion the 12th edition is the very worst ever edition. I teach for the GMAT since 1994 and I have all editions form OG and all the possible "old" booklets since it was paper base test. 12th edition not pass the test by other OG editions....

What do you find disappointing about the 12th Edition? How doesn't it measure up to the 11th?
