Is Vedic Mathematics useful for GMAT ?

Hi,

I've been preparing for GMAT for some time now and am really bad at quant! I wanted to ask all members here whether it would help me if I study Vedic Mathematics ?

It would help a lot to receive suggestions on this ..

Never heard of Vedic Mathematics...

Keep in mind that only a limited set of subjects are tested on the GMAT. You are probably better off studying GMAT textbooks since they feature topics specific to the test. For book recommendations and resources, check out: http://www.beatthegmat.com/wiki/

I understand that I'll have to study the regular GMAT material for the main test..

About Vedic Math, I've heard that it improves calculation speeds by providing some short cuts or whatever (I'm particularly slow in performing calculations..) .. I wanted to know if someone has used it and found it useful ...

Very interesting. There are certainly a lot of ways you can improve pace--perhaps this Vedics Math strategy is one viable option, although I haven't heard anyone in this community discuss it in the past.

If you have some time, do some searching through the GMAT Strategy forum. There have been great discussions on how to improve pace.

I would be interested in the ebook - but I find the price a bit steep (I live in India .. and the currency conversion makes it a bit steep!)..

Would it be possible for you to offer a better deal ?

I had used that book years back .Check out http://www.mlbd.com/. I had procured the book from their store in Chennai India. I think I paid Rs.150 for the same.

I would agree with howardjohn on its relevance to GMAT. Vedic maths helps you to improve calculation speed but I do not think that much speed is required in GMAT. In GMAT the key is to simplify the complex problems so that you solve by simple math or reasoning.

..was about to say that bring gabriel, neo2000, ajith or Prasanna to the thread here.
They are from India and I'm sure they know about vedic maths.

As everyone here said, vedic math allows you to use shortcuts/ easy methods to solve the problems. If you're weak in quant VM will certainly help you get your "basics" right.
be it for GMAT or anything; it helps.

If you're from India, you should get such books in local bookstalls (starting as cheaap as 15 Rs. / $0.30)

Also look for "Shakuntala Devi's" books...they're popular...

PS.: My opinion about VM is different. but that applies to me hence forget it- I've never used those VM strategies b/c I'd already built mine (10-12 years ago Wink

Vedic math is an ancient process of speedy mental math.. originating in India... the famous mathematican Ramanujan was a professed vedic mathematician... he solved the riehman problem using his vedic mathematical techniques.. his formula is what today's atm money system is based on as well...
anyway.. vedic math to be effective is years of training and mental practice.. it aint gonna happen in two to three months.. to be effective enough on the gmat.. plus.. might be " more " helpful only for a few questions..

so i say.. dont stress

hi,

vedic mathematics sure will help with the pace of solving the problems. but, i suggest use the shortcut method that are recommended for elementary calculation like multiplication, division, sq. roots, squaring, cubes ,etc.

though it has got coolest method to solve certain problems. certain methods do give wrong answers.

so, watchword is --- be careful.

Verify the methods u sure will reap the benefits.
