"for the notion that..." is right."for the notion being" distort meaning.

"had experimented" is wrong because there is no action prior to past point of time or past action.

"anh who..." is wrong because there is no "who..." which is before "and who..."

E suggest that "experienting" happen when the person was born. ",doing" show an action happen at the same time and not separated from main verb.

B is left.

A. al-Haytham, who was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and also the notion of science being based on experiment as well as -- past perfect not reqd + laying foundation for x and for Y -- parallelism rule broken

B. al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on experiment as well as

C. al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and who experimented extensively with light and vision, thereby laid the foundation for modern optics and also for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also

D. al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also

Reopening this thread. Can any one explain what is the main verb in B ? I think B has a series of modifiers.

A. al-Haytham, who was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and also the notion of science being based on experiment as well as
Incorrect: "for modern optics and also the notion" is not parallel.

B. al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on experiment as well as
Correct : *"for modern optics and for the notion" -- parallelism
* "notion that" ---> "that" is required to explain the second part of conjunction "for the notion that science should be based on experiment as well as"
*"experimented"(past perfect) is followed by "laying"(past participle)

C. al-Haytham, born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and who experimented extensively with light and vision, thereby laid the foundation for modern optics and also for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also
Incorrect :*for modern optics and also for the notion ----> no parallelism
* "and who experimented" seems absurd

D. al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., and had experimented extensively with light and vision, laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion that science should be based on not only experiment but also
Incorrect : "should be based on not only " is wrong. It should be "should be based not only on"

E. al-Haytham was born in Iraq in 965 C.E., experimenting extensively with light and vision and laying the foundation for modern optics and for the notion of science being based on experiment as well as
Incorrect: "experimenting extensively" changes tense. Hence insufficient.
