I still can't believe I got a 740! Thanks to everyone at Beat the GMAT! I'll give a more detailed report after I get done celebrating a little bit.

Here's my Debrief.

Background: I'm 27 years old with a wife and a daughter. I currently serve in the Air Force as an interpreter. My degree is in a non-technical field. I've always been good with the non-math portions of standardized tests and the GMAT was no different. Also, I was able to take a Manhattan GMAT course, thanks to the Beat the GMAT! Scholarship.

How I studied: I started studying about 5 months ago. I bought the Kaplan 800 and the OG 11th ed. Unfortunately, my study habits weren't the best because of my busy work schedule and taking care of my daughter. I was mainly focused on math because I knew that it was my weakest area. I started the MGMAT course in mid-June. Other than the assigned coursework, I wasn't able to do any additional practice. My course ended in early August and I signed up to test on 1 Sep. At the two week mark, I really focused on my timing and I took a lot of practice tests. My practice test scores are listed below in chronological order.

600 (Q35/V36) (MGMAT)
640 (Q37/V39) (MGMAT)
640 (GMAT Prep)
690 (Q47V37) (MGMAT)
730 (GMAT Prep)
700 (Q43/V41) (MGMAT)

As you can see, I believe that the MGMAT CATs are scored a little bit low.

Lessons learned:

1. Timing is VERY important. I credit a lot of my success to my timing improvements. When I first began taking the practice tests, I would finish each section with 15-20 minutes remaining. From there, I really had to work at slowing myself down and taking the time to analyze each problem.

2. The MGMAT books were a must-have for me. I really feel like they helped me to improve my math skills.

3. Keep notes so that you don't repeat your mistakes. I kept a notebook with all of my mistakes in it. I also included sample problems and concepts that I had trouble understanding. I reviewed these notes weekly. I think it really helped me to solidify some of the more abstract concepts.

4. I suggest that everyone outline on CR and RC. Even though I was pretty good at RC and CR from the start, I feel like outlining the passages on the scratch paper allowed me to really comprehend what I was reading. That way, I didn't have to reread a passage several times.

Finally, I'd like to wish everyone luck with the GMAT and Business School! Have fun studying and remember that the GMAT isn't a reflection of your IQ!

In case you wondering, yeah, I forgot to sign in for my last post. I got my Official Score Report today and I ended up with a 5.0 on the AWA essays. Good enough for me!
