Is it E...

There are 2 separate things ( wages and retirement plans) and we need In addition to ... so A B C are out ..

D is incorrect as it used "were requested"... it should be was requested ( increase is singular ) .

(A) Added to the increase in hourly wages requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.
(B) Added to the increase in hourly wages which had been requested last July, the employees of the railroad are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.
(C) The railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits added to the increase in hourly wages that were requested last July.
(D) In addition to the increase in hourly wages that were requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.
(E) In addition to the increase in hourly wages requested last July, the employees of the railroad are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.
Between (D) and (E). I pick (D).

(E) is incorrect b/c "...hourly wages requested last July.." can't modify "the employees" ... instead a passive voice works... "hourly wages that were requested last July..."

(D)I think "were requested" is right b/c PLURAL NOUN + that should follow by a PLURAL VERB.

A - modifier problem
B - which is incorrectly used
C - "increase...were" incorrect
D - "increase...were" incorrect

E is good. "employees of the railroad" is a bit worrisome but A-D all
have clear errors.

E is the correct answer.

I was stuck between D and E.

I agree that "Increase in hourly wages" - should be followed by "that was requested" or "requested" - "were requested" is clearly NOT correct.

A & B) Modifier Problem. It was the "expanded program of retirement benefits" that was added to "increase in hourly wages" and not "the employess of rail road".
C) Awkward
D) It was the increase that was requested and not the hourly wages. So, "was" is appropriate.
E) Correct

Option A. Added to the increase in hourly wages requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.

This option has a modifier problem 'Added to the increase' also 'employees of railroad' which is non sequitor

Option B . Added to the increase in hourly wages which had been requested last July, the employees of the railroad are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.
Same for this option the modifier is not in sequence with the verb and 'employees of railroad' which is incorrect.

Option C is just and incorrectly written statement which is clearly seen

Option D. In addition to the increase in hourly wages that were requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.
This only reason why i will not throw my weight to support this option is the usage of 'the railroad employees' it is suppose to be the reverse this is the only difference between this option and option E.

Option E. In addition to the increase in hourly wages that were requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.
THIS IS THE CORRECT ANSWER!!!!
This is because the statement was arranged in a logical manner to suits what 'the railroad employees' are clamoring for and it had the perfect modifier.
