Another SC Question from GMATTER

by chatekar » Mon Jul 16, 2007 10:02 am
A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.

A. A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.

B. After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

C. After passing through a red giant stage, a stars mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

D. Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

E. The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

OA is D
My answer was B.
Does option D holds because it's more clear than option B, or there is some error in option B that I’m not able to catch.

In B, the pronoun 'it' in 'depending on its mass' seems to be referring to 'a red giant stage' instead of the star.

to my view .... "will determine" adds an element of uncertainty. Hence its wrong.

chatekar,

Maybe someone can correct me on this , if i am wrong.

regarding your previous post : "will determine" is not same as "will".

The mass of the star is a current feature of the star. So the determination happens now....however the compression takes place in future , hence "will compress" is ok.

Option A.
Option A does not follow parallelism since the rule of the cause and effect should follow each other.

Option B.
This option also suffers what happens to Option A. It does not follow parallelism.

Option C.
This option contains grammatic errors and does not follow the right sequence. 'a stars mass' incorrect error.

Option D.
This is the correct answer as it holds and more complete than option B, because it follows normal parallelism and good sentence construction.

Option E.
This looks definitely incorrect and does not follow parallelism
