what is the rule for sentences with "As well as" phrase? Is the verb form singular or plural?

'as well as' is used for parallelism. for example--if a noun preceeds this phrase, then a noun must follow: johnny is a friend as well as a confidant.

I think this is wrong, it should be singular..

"As well as" is just an additive phrase that joins two subjects but doesn't form a compound subject on addition. As a result the number of the original subject doesn't change because of the additive phrase. Only and can join two subjects to form a compound subject.
example:
rjangada as well as johny IS studying hard to beat the GMAT.
rjangada and johny ARE studying hard to beat the GMAT.



PS: Refer Manhattan SC's Chapter on Subject verb agreement.
