The proportion of females among high school soccer players has dramatically increased over the past 15 years. This is seen in surveys completed by graduating seniors. In 1985, less than 10% of senior girls surveyed had played soccer in high school. In 2000, more than 25% of girls surveyed had participated in soccer. To evaluate the argument above, which of the following pieces of additional information would be most helpful?

A.The percentage of male high school soccer players for the class of 1985 and 2000.
B.The percentage of girls who played soccer after high school.
C.The percentage of girls that graduated from high school in 1985.
D.The percentage of girls that did not graduate but did play soccer in high school for the class of 2000.
E.The percentage of boys that graduated from high school in 1985 and 2000.

A company that manufactures heavy industrial equipment employs dozens of people in jobs that are considered quite hazardous. The company obeys federal regulations governing workplace safety, and, to comply with new regulations instituted to avoid recently discovered risks from airborne particulate matter, company engineers were required to install extremely expensive air filtering equipment. However, despite the expense of the air filtering equipment, the company's operating costs for the quarter were considerably lower than normal.Which of the following, if true, most helps to resolve the apparent paradox?

A.Over half the company's expenditures to maintain worker safety go to pay for protective garments; yet only a small percentage of such expenditures go to pay for nose and mouth filters.
B.Prior to the installation of the air filtering equipment, the company had had to prevent damage due to particulate contamination of manufacturing equipment.
C.The company's costs of labor, which make up a large fraction of operating costs, increased during the same period.
D.When the air filtering equipment was installed in the manufacturing facility, the company took the opportunity to upgrade the temperature control equipment.
E.The majority of the company's employees work in the areas of the plant in which the air filtering equipment was installed.

I CHOSE D ANS IS B WHY?????

The claim is proportion of females among high school soccer players has dramatically increased over the past 15 years. .

If we know the % of male soccer players for each of the years 1985 and
2000, we can hence compute the % of female soccer players and
validate the claim above.

Hence A

I CHOSE D ANS IS B WHY?????

In D, upgrading the temperature control equipment tells us nothing
about operating costs i.e. did it increase or decrease. So, it doesn't
help answer the question of decrease in operating costs.

B bridges the gap by telling us that there was cost involved in protecting
manufacturing equipment prior to the air filter installation. So,
by installing filters, it obviates the need for protection and hence
the costs.

This can explain why opex went down.
