Work Problem

by Vasudha » Mon May 07, 2007 8:46 am
4 tractors can plow a field in 8 hours. After 2 hours, 3 tractors leave the field. How long will the remaining tractor take to finish plowing the field? How many hours has the remaining tractor worked overall to plow the field?

4 tractors --- 8 hrs ---- 1 field
1 tractor ---- 8 hrs ----- 1/4 field
1 tractor ----- 1 hr ----- 1/32 field

4 tarctors ---- 2 hrs ----- 2*4/32 = 1/4 th field

So remainder = 3/4th field

1 tractor ---- 1 field ---- 32 hrs
1 tractor ----- 3/4 field ---- 3*32/4 = 24 hrs

Overall time = 24 + 2 = 26 hrs
