Q:
Sulfur dioxide, a major contributor to acid rain, is an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the respiratory system's ability to deal with all other pollutants.

(A) an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the respiratory system's ability to deal
(B) an especially serious pollutant because of diminishing the respiratory system's capability of dealing
(C) an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the capability of the respiratory system in dealing
(D) a specially serious pollutant because it diminishes the capability of the respiratory system to deal
(E) a specially serious pollutant because of diminishing the respiratory system's ability to deal

I chose D, but the posted answer was A.
Isn't it better not to use 'possessive noun' expression with " 's " to mention noun which is not a human? And rather, isn't it better to use 'N of N' expression?

In other words, I thought that "the capability of the respiratory system" is better than "ther respiratory system's ability", because it's more clear to make the relation between two nouns and respiratory system is not human being so " 's " expression is incorrect. My guessing was wrong?

Please explain this. thanks.

i ll answer to your doubt later.

here one should discard E & D first ...
since especially is especially important here. Laughing

cut B also.

Now remains A & C and hence your query Smile

here s the trick: respiratory system is a human organ anyways. Wink

one food for thought is coming in next post for you and other members Smile

try it.

I think the first one sounds better. hmmmm...
The second one seems wordy.

Return to my question,
There are differences between the choice A & D;
1) the capability vs ability
2) specially vs especially
3) possessive expression <'s> vs the use of <of>

choce C cannot be the correct answer, I think, because <in dealing with> is weird.

What should be the no. 1 priority to chose an answer?
and what is the key point on this question?
(possessive expression is the point? or usage of word??)

Thank you, Johny.

i think there is no "specially serious pollutant" or "not so special serious pollutants"
that makes a difference
