Pls advise on career goals !

by siamr » Mon Aug 17, 2015 1:11 am
Hi Admissionado team,

I am a sailor, a marine engineer working on cargo ships engaged in international voyages. Now I have planned to pursue an MBA so as to reach the decision making level of this supply and logistic industry.

I need your advise on my short and long term goals. I am not sure how credible they sound because it's just what I want to do and not sure if the adcoms will like it or consider it professional.

Background - Ship Operation , a logistic part of the big supply chain.

Why Career change - No career growth opportunity in shipping, Even if I stay the highest position I can achieve is of Chief Engineer and I want to reach the top decision making level of the global supply chain, so need a career change.

Long Term Goal- Have seen complexities and problems faced by seafarers. Long term goal is to start a company to cater the needs of seafarers across the globe. A global setup which will connect seafarers to their home country through a supply chain network. They will be able to order retail products from their home country and even personal items from their homes and the same will be delivered at any convenient port of call. However, this requires experience as a supply chain manager, strong networking and capital.

Short Term Goal - To work as supply chain manager, preferably in procurement, for companies which have set a benchmark in global supply chain such as Apple and Amazon. This experience will gradually help me to attain my long term goal.

Please need your initial assessment on my rough outline. I am more concerned about my long term goal ? Does it sounds unprofessional as it won't have a bigger reach (only limited to seafarer community)...

Awaiting your response and suggestion/criticism. Thanks

Hello there!

Well you definitely have an interesting profile and background (probably lots of good stories too)

Your Long-Term goals are a bit "iffy" to me. My suggestion would be rather that you choose something more traditional.

i.e. - moving up in shipping to become CEO of a big shipping company
Or the same with supply chain.

Your startup idea is pretty cool, but unless you have some way to back up that you can actually pull it through (like previous startup experience, promises of investment money) it may be disadvantageous of you to present such goals to the AdCom.

I hope my answer has been clear and helpful,
Best,
Jon

Hi Jon,

Thanks for a very insightful and valuable reply. I definitely agree that the startup plan may not sound credible to Adcoms. However, If I state my long term goal is to become CEO in a Shipping Company, will that be inline with my short term goals. Or is it better to reach a senior management position in a supply chain company. Well, to be frank I am confused how can I connect my LT goal to my past and ST goal.

Well, my take is that either are believable. But you are write that one you go with shipping or supply chain, it might be better to stick to one. (although honestly, a transition from one to the other would also be believable). Given the uniqueness of your experience, why not make it Shipping Industry with Supply Chain as the function?
