Freedman’s survey showed that people living in small towns and rural areas consider themselves no happier than do people living in big cities.

(A) no happier than do people living
(B) not any happier than do people living
(C) not any happier than do people who live
(D) no happier than are people who are living
(E) not as happy as are people who live

What is diff between no hapier and not any happier?

People living in small cities is parallel with people living in big cities

So C & E are out

I don't think the who is needed in D

Between A & B, its between no happier vs not any happier

To me no happier is quantifying the happiness

not any happier is just negating the happiness

I could not make a decision and felt that A is best because it does not change the meaning even if my understanding is wrong

What is the OA?

I think it is A.
This is what I have found.

No is a determiner expressing quantity like 'all', 'every', 'many', 'some', 'any', 'each', 'either', 'one', 'another' and is used before singular and plural nouns. It is similar in meaning to 'not a' or 'not any' and is often our preferred choice if we want to give emphasis to what we are saying. Compare:
•I have no idea what he is referring to. (more emphatic)
•I don't have any idea what he is referring to. (less emphatic)

Not is used to make a clause or sentence negative and usually combines with the verb 'to be' and with adjectives, adverbs, noun groups or prepositional phrases.

Does anyone know what is "do" in choice A referring to? I picked A since it's the better one compared to the other choices, but I would have liked to see the choice read, "no happier than people living in big cities do".(unless big cities is not underlined, so that would leave me no choice). My thought was, "do" would paralleel "considering themselves". Can anyone let me know what you think about it? Appreciate it.

If "do" as given in A represent's "consider", it's not parallel to the first comparision. Remember, the first comparision says , "prople living in small towns consider themselves", so the parallel comparision should have the verb "do" after people. Besides, if you replace "do" with "consider" in the underlined comparision of Choice A, it does't make sense(than consider people living in big cities).

In this statement two things are being compared..the feelings of one set of people with another set of people..so the word "do" is used to express that..A is the right answer as it makes the right comparison and is clear and concise
