Need help to improve

by jay_gmat » Tue Sep 17, 2013 2:54 am
Hi,
In the last GMAT Prep test I took(was on Sep I was able to score just 27 in Verbal. I got a 44 in Quant but my overall score was hit. I've put in consistent efforts to improve on my verbal ability. Re-Read MGMAT's Sentence Correction guide and have been following the posts related to Verbal in this forum. My exam is in 20 days' time. Please suggest methods to improve my score.

Experts. Please help.Thanks.

Dear Jay,
I'm happy to help. :-)

First of all, here's a detailed one-month schedule:
https://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/1-month-gm ... -schedule/
I realize you will have to accelerate that a bit.
Also, here is a three-month schedule from which you may want to draw for additional resources:
https://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/3-month-gm ... l-focused/

Also, I would recommend reading all the verbal article on that free blog. There's a ton there that could help you consolidate your understanding of GMAT Verbal. Here, for free, is a practice SC question:
https://gmat.magoosh.com/questions/3264
When you submit your answer, the next page will have both a video explanation & a text explanation, for accelerated learning.

I hope all this helps.
Mike :-)

Hi jay_gmat,

What is your goal for Test Day? And how have you been scoring on your CATs?

Hi Jay
To push from 27 to 34+..Takes some effort. You need to gather as many SC rules as possible. Study the CR questions types and decode the logic and do extensive reading.

Probably these learning videos can help you.. You need to analyse each every OG question you do.

Hi Rich,
Thanks for your reply. I had started off with a target score of 700 in July. However, seeing my Verbal scores now, I doubt whether I'll be able to pull that off :-( though I am ready to put in whatever it takes. I hope the score I target is still realistic at this stage.

Here's the schedule I followed.
I didn't enroll myself into any course. Just self-studied using the OG13 and set of Manhattan GMAT books. I finished all questions in OG back to back. Though I found the error logging technique much later, I marked all the questions I got wrong for review later. I am currently working on those questions as well.

I took the GMAT Prep Test 1 twice.
Test 1 : 540 (Verbal 25)
Test 2 : 580 ( Verbal 27)

I am a non-native English speaker.I don't really want to give up at this stage and want to put my best to increase my verbal score to the maximum extent.

After I had this blow ( two consecutive poor scores), I browsed though posts in this forum and changed my strategy. The thing is that I have developed a slight fear of failure ( I know it'll do more harm than good).

I have discovered that RC and SC were the pain areas. I have been working for two weeks now to improve in these areas. RC seems to be better now. I had little trouble with all those grammatical terms in SC ( getting a hang of it now though).

Please suggest how many more practice tests I should take at this stage. Also, I am currently working out the problems in OG Verbal Review.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Mike

Thanks for your help. :-) Please suggest how many practice tests I can take before I appear for the real test. I have taken two CAT's till now and have managed to pull off just 25 and 27 in Verbal in these. Is it a good idea to do as many practice tests as possible ?

I have planned this for the remaining weeks.
MGMAT 1
GMAT Prep Test 2 - 1st attempt
Veritas 1
GMAT Prep test 2 - 2nd attempt ( This would be a week prior to my test).

Is this fine or there is scope for betterment?

Thanks again for all your help.
