This SC can actually be solved with one Verb rule, although there are also Parallelism rules in play.
1) Verbs: Here we have 2 past events - "the merchandisers REPORTED" about their December business AND a reference to their business a year before. With two past events, we need the verb "had." Eliminate A, B, C and E.
