Topic: MIT Sloan Recommendation Question?
PostFri Nov 06, 2009 4:07 pm Reply with quote

From reading MIT Sloan's application instructions, I can only submit two recommendations. I plan to use my ex-boss and ex-mentor from my former employer. Is it possible to submit a third peer recommendation that will provide a personal viewpoint of me?

I was hoping to have an ex-colleague who currently attends MIT Sloan write a letter for me. She and I worked on philanthropic projects via organizations such as Acumen Fund and we both helped to start up an international e-learning non-profit. What is the procedure for sending a letter from alumni or current attendees?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Every school has a different policy on additional recommendations (on top of the official recommendations). Some schools, such as Stanford, do not accept such emails, whereas other schools it's encourage. I would contact the Sloan admissions or check their website for your answer. Either way, I'd try to get as many of these in. Does that help answer your question?

Yes thank you. I am having trouble contacting MIT Admissions. Do you know their contact info? I tried several emails but I have not heard a reply.

What do you think about Wharton's policy:
Quote:
Wharton strongly recommends applicants submit only the suggested two recommendations. Keep in mind that, as with all aspects of the application, we consider applicants’ judgment when making our evaluation.

However, if you feel it necessary to submit a third recommendation, it can be emailed by your recommender. Please encourage your recommender to include your name and applicant ID in the subject line.
Is it better to submit three or only two for Wharton based on the above quote?

I do not think that a recommendation from someone at MIT is going to help your chances at Wharton so I would say stick to two. Is there some reason you are worried about the two you have? If so, then possible include three (and also add the reasons why you included three in your optional essay - if you do not have one already).
