If you don’t know what NPV stands for you will quickly learn in the first quarter of business school. For those who cannot wait, it is the Net Present Value (“NPV”) of an investment. That is to say, it takes all of the cash flow generated from an action (buying property, expanding your business, etc), both positive and negative, and sums them in inflation/interest adjusted current terms.

Networking seems a bit fake for most people, but if you approach it from the right angle it can make the difference in your entire career path. You will be paying a hefty price for two years of education that you could realistically get from a library card and some initiative. But what you are really paying for is to be part of a community that will be very successful and very helpful to each other in the years to come.

Columbia Business School (CBS) recently welcomed Mary Miller as its new assistant dean of admissions. Miller brings almost 30 years of experience in the admissions field. She comes to CBS from the College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she managed MBA admissions, student affairs and career services as associate dean from 2002 to 2009. She also served as associate dean of MBA admissions at New York University’s Stern School of Business for several years and as director of undergraduate programs at the College of Business Administration at the University of Iowa.
Miller joins CBS as part of its recent move to combine admissions for the MBA and Executive MBA degree programs. Linda Meehan, who previously headed MBA admissions at the school, will remain active at CBS but will focus more of her attention on alumni affairs, Miller tells us.
Clear Admit caught up with Miller for an interview about her new role and about the overall admissions process at CBS. A transcript of the discussion follows.

On today’s show, four representatives from four very different online or “hybrid” MBA programs talk about how their programs are designed, and what kinds of people make up the student body.
