The GMAT Avengers Challenge of the Week: Arithmetic – Part 1

Happy Wednesday!

After a successful series on Algebra (see transcript of Part 1 and Part 2), the GMAT Avengers have now set their sights on the other big Quant topic. Make sure you join Rahul and the rest of the group on Saturday, June 10 at 11:30am EST as they’ll tackle Arithmetic.

In the meantime, here’s this week’s challenge problem for you to solve:

2ab5 is a four-digit number. What is the value of the two-digit number ab?

(1) The two digit number ab is a multiple of 13.

(2) The four digit number 2ab5 is divisible by 25.

A) Statement (1) BY ITSELF is sufficient to answer the question, but statement (2) by itself is not.

B) Statement (2) BY ITSELF is sufficient to answer the question, but statement (1) by itself is not.

C) Statements (1) and (2) TAKEN TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question, even though NEITHER statement BY ITSELF is sufficient.

D) EITHER statement BY ITSELF is sufficient to answer the question.

E) Statements (1) and (2) TAKEN TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question, requiring more data pertaining to the problem.

  • The 4 digit number is "2ab5"

    Statement 1: The two digit number ab is a multiple of 13.
    ab can take multiple values: 13,26,39,52,65,78,91. This statement is not sufficient.

    Statement 2: The four digit number 2ab5 is divisible by 25.
    If the last two digits of the number are 00, 25, 50, or 75, then the number is divisible by 25. As ab can take multiple values, this statement is not sufficient.

    Combining both statements we get, that from statement 1 only 52 satisfies both the statements. ab is 52.

    Answer is C
