Sunil on October 14th, 2010 at 6:39 am
Hi,
The correct answer to this question is option B.
We need to maintain a parallelism here.
was advised, told and interrogated clearly maintains the parallelism.
The use of "had" in the options D and E is not required as there is no other action in the past and moreover these options are not parallel as well.
So correct answer is B.

Komal Saini on October 14th, 2010 at 7:13 am
Correct answer is B.
We need to maintain a parallelism here.
was "advised", "told" and "interrogated" maintains the parallelism.
Komal Saini on October 14th, 2010 at 7:19 am
In A there is a parallelism error - "advised", "told", "was interrogated".
In C parallelism error “that he could not leave” not parallel with other elements.
In D parallelism error "had a right to remain silent", "could not leave", and "was interrogated".
In E, parallelism error "that he had a right to remain silent", "that he could not leave", and "was interrogated" not parallel.

It Should be B. The verb 'advised' is a command subjunctive and tale to+infinitive correctly in B. Also it maintains parallelism. However, in D and E had is wrong as well we don't need 'that'.
Srikpv on October 14th, 2010 at 7:42 am
Correct answer E.
Parallelism has to be maintained.
'that he had a right to remain silent, that he could not leave' are parallel.
'was advised' and 'was interrogated' are parallel.

Parallel structure: advised, told, interrogated
Aneetha on October 14th, 2010 at 9:17 am
Correct answer :B
C,D and E ruled out.
A:Was in the end breaks the parallelism .As the preceding clause, as the verb ‘told’ .Here 'was' is implied.
prsnt11 on October 14th, 2010 at 9:51 am
Correct Answer: B
2/3 Split: "and was" / "and"
Main Clause: "The suspect.. was advised..,told.. and interrogated..." is parallel so correct. 'was' is not needed before 'interrogated'.
Therefore eliminate choices A,D,E.
C) Not parallel; also this answer choice alters the meaning of the original sentence by omitting the verb 'told'.
Therefore B is the correct answer.

Answer is B.
Parallelism issue as "was advised" is use before the strike so other verbs need to be in parallel like "told", "and interrogated".
Chandra Pallaka on October 14th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
You have to put the "was" in front of all three, or else just the first one. so B and C are left. two ands in C. B has parallel verb structure. advised, told and interrogated.
I go with B.
Vishal J on October 14th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
B. "Advise of" and "Advise that" both of them are correct idioms. This is a case of parallelism. Since the sentence is in passive voice, we want all commonents to be passive. The first three answer choices are comparing actions in the main clause. And the last two choices are comparing the options in the depended clause ( or adverbial clause). The parallelism in the dependent clause ( D and E) is distorting the meanings. Also, E lacks proper parallelism (i.e. occurance of "THAT"). C is not parallel. Also, the meaning in C changes - "he interrogated in the detention room". A is out because we don't need "was" for the sake of parallelism.

The Correct answer would be B.
Umang on October 14th, 2010 at 10:39 pm
The options have a 3-2 split.
Option B is the credited response. It has right structure for parallelism and concise. Verbs advised, told & interrogated are in same tense and thus parallel
Optin D & E can be rejected becuase they use a mix of tenses - he had (past perfect) and was (simple past)
Thus B is the answer

The correct answer is E.
a) The suspect in the burglary was advised of his right to remain silent, told he could not leave, and was interrogated in a detention room.
: this sounds like the suspect is telling that he could not leave.
b) The suspect in the burglary was advised of his right to remain silent, told he could not leave, and interrogated in a detention room.
:Similarly, "told he could not leave" does not maintain parallelism
c) The suspect in the burglary was advised of his right to remain silent and that he could not leave and interrogated in a detention room.
: "interrogated in a " is not parallel to "he could not leave" which the introduction of 'that' would expect
d) The suspect in the burglary was advised that he had a right to remain silent, could not leave, and was interrogated in a detention room.
: With phrases "he had a right to" and "could not leave" parallelism is incorrect .
e) The suspect in the burglary was advised that he had a right to remain silent, that he could not leave, and was interrogated in a detention room.
: "was advised" and "was interrogated" are parallel, so are "that he had a right" and "that he could" .
