Main verb and helping verb

by navami » Wed May 18, 2011 8:56 pm
1. What is the difference between main verb and helping verb?
2. How to find which is the main verb and which is helping verb? How we can distinguish Main verb from helping verb?
3. Please provide some examples (similar to real time) questions, which are based on the above rule.
This time no looking back!!!

The main verb describes the actual action taking place. The helping verb modifies the main verb.

EXAMPLE: He was going to the store.

"Going" is the main verb. "was" is the helping verb.

This concept is not tested on the GMAT specifically, but if you need some help with verb basics, I suggest you try these worksheets:

I believe there are also some explanations on YouTube.
