Looking for advice re: prep options Post Tue Apr 27, 2010 5:34 pm
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out what kind of test prep I need to do, and I'd love some advice.

I recently took a practice GMAT (downloaded from the official site) and scored a 780, but I'm a little concerned about the validity of that. (Some of the Quant questions looked familiar, and I have a sneaking suspicion that I started in on that same practice test at some point within the last couple of years but got sidetracked and had to quit.) In any case, what it boils down to is that I think my performance on the Quant section may have been inflated, but I'm pretty sure my performance on the Verbal section was legit--those questions didn't look familiar at all, and I got them all right with a decent chunk of time to spare. So I'm thinking that my real performance level at present is somewhere between low and mid 700s, and I want to target my test prep so that I'm consistently hitting the high end of that range.

Given that, I want my prep to focus on hard Quant problems (and particularly data sufficiency problems). Also, I'd love to have some kind of formal AWA prep. I write for a living, so in theory, I should be in good shape, but the format actually concerns me a little. I'm used to writing 130-page manuscripts over a 2-week period, so I'm not totally sold on my ability to bang out something passable in 30 minutes.

So in light of all that, can I expect to get what I need out of a Princeton Review classroom course? I know that classroom courses need to cater to a wide range of abilities, but I got the impression that Princeton Review courses were at least somewhat tailored according to students' baseline performance. Alternatively, if classroom courses aren't the way to go, should I be seeking out private tutoring/Manhattan GMATs "Quest for 750" workshops + something additional to help me get comfortable with the AWA?

Any advice would be awesome. Thanks!
