IMO the IMO's without explanation are of little help.

Well the answer is E because of parallelism. Words like and, but etc call for parallelism.

Compare the parts before and after 'but' here. Laos has a land..... But a population of....

Hope that helps

Agreed, but the reason why i dont write explanations is because i don't know the particular rule used here. Wherever i can give a way to get to the answer, i do

I chose C.

"...but a population of only four million..." - it's not clear whether the phrase references Laos or Great Britain, how is this correct?

IMO E.

C is wrong as it lacks parallelism as explained by saketk. also it seems there is a redundancy same size as great britain's is enough no need for land area again.

Laos has a land area ..., but a population ...

E. comparable to that of Great Britain, but a population of only four million, many of whom

Options C and E use the correct comparison. Laos's land area vs Great Britain's land area

Option C is all wordy and imprecise. I think the answer is certainly E.

1 - land area is compared and 2 - a logical contrast is presented.

hope this helps...

Hi amit.trivedi@ymail.com,
Can you explain the wrong part in D ?
You means that 'land area' can't be compared to 'the size', don't you?

And why A is not rigt? Could you explain in depth ?

Laos has a land area about the same size as Great Britain but only four million in population, where many are members of hill tribes.
A. about the same size as Great Britain but only four million in population, where many Landarea vs Grt Britian- eliminated
B. of about the same size as Great Britain is, but in Laos there is a population of only four million, and many Landarea vs Grt Britian- eliminated
C. that is about the same size as Great Britain's land area, but in Laos with a population of only four million people, many of them - changes the meaning. Original sentence means that though Loas has same land area as that of GB its population is low
D. comparable to the size of Great Britain, but only four million in population, and many - same reason as A&B
E. comparable to that of Great Britain, but a population of only four million, many of whom - Correct and precise. Landarea vs Land area of GB. Shows the correct contrast. Land area is the same but a population of only 4M. And what follows next ", many of whom" correctly modifies the population
