Kellogg/Booth Part-time admissions? Post Sat Feb 25, 2012 11:32 am
Hello,

I am a 26 year old female who has worked in the commercial real estate industry for 4 years (acquisitions and consulting). I am interested in Kellogg and Booth's part time programs. I took the GMAT once and scored a 690, have a 3.2 GPA from a top 20 undergrad school, and have some extracurricular activities. I am confident I will have strong recommendations. Do you think I should retake the GMAT to increase my chances of getting into Kellogg or Booth's part time programs?

I'm not an expert but in addition to retaking (if you think you CAN bump up your GMAT), I think you would be well-served to take a few grad level courses and ace them. Many people who have a slightly lower GPA compensate by knocking the GMAT outta the park and/or also taking some courses to show a stronger (but "second") GPA. This will show them that you will be able to handle the rigors of their program.

Hi, I'm 30 and just got a 660 on my GMT and will be applying to Kellogg/Booth Part Time. I have a 3.55 GPA, 8-9 years work experience and strong recommendations, and strong leadership experiences. Do you think I should retake the GMAT?

Hi ChicagoGal,

I think you are fine with a 690 GMAT score. I say this assuming that you will put together a shining application and that it will be strong in all other ways - particularly the essays and recommendations. I am also assuming you have one or two strong extracurricular activities to write about. If you present no other "weak" areas, that 690 should be fine. When working with candidates, most women I have worked with who had 3.2 GPAs and a 690 GMAT score could get into a top school like Columbia (a reflection, I would like to think, of the strong application we helped them put forward). For this reason, you should be fine when applying to the part-time programs, which generally tend to be much easier to get into than Columbia's full-time program. To tailor this advice more, I would need to know what college you attended, and you can feel free to send that info to me in a private message.

Sure, a higher GMAT score could make admission more of a sure thing, but I think that if you handle your application excellently you will be fine. The recs are important, so make sure those are absolutely stellar!

Best wishes,
Dr. Shel (Shelly Watts)

Hi,

The advice I offered to ChicagoGal also applies to you.

But for you more specifically, a 660 GMAT score is always considered somewhat low, and the difference between having a 660 and and 680 can be important for outcomes. But your GPA is strong. In general, for part-time programs your GPA matters more than the GMAT score (but a higher GMAT score can compensate for a lower GPA). A 660 GMAT score can be a deciding factor, though, if an admissions committee much choose between candidates who seem equally strong in most other respects. Meaning, the 660 could function as the basis for a rejection. So you should consider taking it again, but I would only recommend taking the GMAT again if you are fairly certain it can go higher. Have you been taking lots of practice full exams and projecting your score?

If a 660 ends up being the highest score you have, there are plenty of ways to deflect attention away from the score toward other strengths as you write the essays.

Make sure to put together an outstanding application in all other respects and pay particular attention to the recs. Those can make a tremendous impact on outcomes.

The long-and-short of this is: yes, the 660 is a weakness, but you should be able to override that weakness if you put together your application excellently.

Best wishes,
Dr. Shel (Shelly Watts)
